DAWN (Dementia Awareness Warwickshire Network)
DAWN was born out of the trauma faced by residents, relatives and staff when Magnolia house, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire closed at the end of January 2003. If a home, which was recognised to offer the best in dementia care could not be saved, even though it was recognised that homes such as Magnolia were desperately needed, then it was time to seriously address this crisis in care, where the most vulnerable in our society lost their final security and subsequently five residents lost their lives within five weeks of being moved. We felt that someone had to speak out and at least try to make sure this situation was not allowed to continue unabated.
In essence we didn’t want others to face the same trauma, at a time in their lives when they should feel most safe and secure.
